Kiwanis Pancake Day

Kiwanis Pancake Day, a tradition throughout Kiwanis worldwide, is in its 53rd year in Minot. This event traditionally raises thousands of dollars so the Kiwanis Club of Minot can support children oriented projects and organizations like the YMCA, Companions for Children, Boy Scouts, Juvenile Drug Court, Bishop Ryan After Prom Party, Surrey After Prom Party, Sawyer After Prom Party, Roosevelt Park Zoo, and Domestic Violence Crisis Center, just to name a few. Members are up bright and early to begin cooking and open the doors to the ND State Fair Center at 7 a.m. This event coincides with the Y’s Men’s Rodeo in October. Kiwanis members are always thrilled to flip pancakes so a child can have a pass to the zoo, or a school can have additional prizes to stay safe after prom, or a kid who normally wouldn’t attend camp, now has that opportunity. The group feeds hundreds of people each year for a small $5 ticket. Each person receives all the pancakes they can eat, while milk, juice and extra sausage are an additional cost.

Kiwanis Karolers

Singing isn’t our expertise, but we don’t mind doing it to raise money for a good cause: the Salvation Army and Community Action. The group of holiday carolers go to area businesses and sing a Christmas song or two, but to get rid of us, we’ll need a donation in our hat! Traditionally, the group has raised two to three thousand dollars from generous people. This event takes place in December.

Pass the Cup

Weekly donations can be just a dollar or two each week, but it adds up and beneifts many. Money goes to Kiwanis’ project account, which is used to donate to worthy causes in Minot ranging from Companions for Children to the Domestic Violence Crisis Center to school programs through the Minot Area Council for the Arts. Some weeks, the group will specify a program they want the weekly donation to go to, such as Thanksgiving baskets for the needy.

The first meeting of each month, Minot’s Kiwanis Club contributes their weekly Pass the Cup donations to Project Eliminate. Project Eliminate is a partnership initiative between Kiwanis International and Unicef to do away with maternal and neonatal tetanus, which claims the lives of 60,000 newborns in over 30 countries each year, and mothers may die as well. Three doses of a $0.60 vaccine can protect mothers and babies. View the video below to learn more about this important cause, or visit the Project Eliminate website.
